hadley irina crane
MAY 22 1987 (27) • RAISED IN WASHINGTON PARK • LIVES IN CAPITOL HILL • TATTOO ARTIST

by the time hadley irina was born, a sunny may morning, the crane family already had three children. as the baby of the family, there was a greater level of permissiveness in how hadley was raised, not to mention the level of expectation her parents had for her. certainly, they wouldn't have been happy if hadley was a failure, but all of their high expectations had already been placed on the shoulders of her older siblings, leaving hadley free to be herself. herself, even as a child, was someone prone to following her own whims. as a student, hadley was always immensely frustrating for teachers -- the epitome of bright but unmotivated, hadley did her best to scrape by just enough but rarely exerted herself to succeed. for her, ambition seemed to only lead to neuroticism and pain; she looked around at her more driven peers and siblings and saw them often stressed out from all of their striving. however, lest anyone assume hadley was content just to coast through her life, whenever she found something she really, truly enjoyed, she threw herself into it entirely. although hadley amassed an eclectic number of skills, she had no direction she clearly wanted to go in when she graduated high school. though the cranes were comfortably middle class, hadley knew she would be a financial burden on her parents if she went to college -- two of her siblings were at university at the time as well, and hadley didn't even know if she wanted to go. instead, she decided to take a 'gap year', and left colorado for nearly a year to become an au pair in france. even after she returned to denver, she had achieved no more clarity than before and spent the next several years working a number of odd, and often thankless, jobs. in time, hadley realized tattoo artistry would be a fine career for herself. she had loved drawing since childhood, and had become quite proficient since then, but hadn't seen a clear way to make a career as an artist without "starving" in the prefix. by twenty-two she began amassing her portfolio and found an artist to take her on as an apprentice, and by twenty-five she was working at the blue door to pay off said apprenticeship. hadley has continued to work at the blue door in the nearly two and a half years since, got herself a sweet apartment in capitol hill, and lives her life by the very simple principle of doing whatever makes her happy.
